Presentation: "Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin Fraud - What is it and how to investigate it?"

Speaker:Dorothy Haraminac, MBA, CFE, MAFF, PI

Ms. Haraminac used financial forensics to develop and testify to her expert opinion on cryptocurrency assets held by and on behalf of an individual, becoming the first U.S. court-qualified expert on bitcoin asset and cryptocurrency tracing.

Ms. Haraminac’s expertise includes oil and gas operator disputes, economic damage analysis, and technology process review and controls. She provides consulting and testimony in complex commercial disputes as well as matrimonial disputes. Her firm provides risk management for physical and digital asset security, including executive extraction, risk assessments (fraud, cyber, and traditional), and process recommendations.

Dorothy serves on the Council of Industry Advisors for Houston Baptist University where she provides industry insight and builds strategic partnerships to guide HBU’s three cyber engineering degree programs. She also volunteers her time to train law enforcement, attorneys, and licensed investigators on cybercrime, gathering digital evidence in emerging technology such as bitcoin, other blockchain implementations, business email compromise, and darknet investigations. She encourages collaboration and transparency because it engenders strength in best practices and
propels her industry forward

Presentation Description:

Summary
This course is designed for fraud examiners to develop an understanding of cryptocurrency ecosystems and their participants. In it, attendees will dispel several myths of bitcoin’s blockchain and be prepared to learn how to trace bitcoin and other cryptocurrency transactions. Attendees will review the first fraud committed with bitcoin, which happened in Houston, TX, and review the best proof of concept for bitcoin, which happened in Austin, TX. In addition, attendees will learn a method to validate records released as part of a data breach and how those records may be
relied upon as business records in court.

Objective and Purpose
  • The purpose of this course is to inform attendees about bitcoin, how cryptocurrency works, and how to investigate it.
  • Attendees will deconstruct a blockchain transaction:
  • – Identify types and motives of participants in cryptocurrency ecosystems, specifically bitcoin.
  • – Examine famous transactions on bitcoin’s blockchain and understand the underlying ideology.
  • – Explore marketplaces for various cryptocurrencies.
  • – Evaluate ethical issues in gathering evidence and become aware of common pitfalls.
  • – Identify the first frauds committed with cryptocurrency.
  • – Prepare for tracing cryptocurrency with open source tools and understand how to identify red flags when evaluating tracing
